the challenge
This client wanted an extensive and comprehensive online educational platform where global students could learn, collaborate, and share as a means to grow their knowledge of various 3D and Visual Effects (VFX) industries. Launch was initially on a desktop platform with the plan for a second phase on a mobile platform. I was approached to help design the visual organization and interface. It was quickly determined that a holistic approach focused on the user flow learning process. The challenge was to structure a system based on teaching intent, faculty expertise, and the student learning process to foster learning and retention.
my approach
Based on the client’s business goals in conjunction with the established learning taxonomy, I created a modular system including a UI Pattern library that allowed for flexibility and successful outcomes. Anticipating users’ learning needs and designing access to needed resources throughout the learning process, in easy to access locations, allowed for a stronger user experience and more student learning successes.
wire frames
The culmination of branding, messaging, educational content, and user flow are infused into the wireframes to complete the initial design phase with near final hi-resolution interactive prototypes for the client to preview, a student to try out or more research to be done with.
hi-res prototypes
Once the initial concepts are inked, user flows established, mock ups were designed of all major screen categories. Some rapid prototyping for early testing was created to help measure user flow concepts and ease of resource navigation. Below is a small sampling of final wire frames. Note the similarity to hi res prototypes farther down the page.
